Tea for a Good Nights Sleep

I have battled insomnia for as long as I can remember. In my early twenties I became desperate for a good nights sleep and asked my doctor for some help. For the next 6 years I was prescribed medications such as trazodone, temazepam, lorazepam, and eszopiclone. These are pretty serious medications and they came with some pretty nasty side effects. I experienced drowsiness the next day, grumpiness, issues with my memory, and an eerily quick tolerance for each medication. The quick build up of tolerance was particularly scary because I knew taking more and more of whatever medication I was on could be extremely risky.

I did a lot of research and after some hit and misses I found that the combination of valerian root and melatonin together helped reset my bodies natural sleep/wake times. I would start to feel sleepy at night and actually be able to fall asleep on my own. It was really nice not to have to worry about nasty side effects. I felt human again and not like my old, zombie self.

On nights that I tend to be more anxious I drink hot chamomile tea with some crushed cardamom seeds in it. Recently, I read about another tea that helps with insomnia, as well. I tried it and I feel as though it did help although I wasn’t too fond of eating the banana with the peel still on it. I might just stick to the banana tea on its own. Bon appetite!

Banana Tea

Using only a couple items that are likely already in your kitchen, you can whip together a banana tea in no time! This organic, banana-infused sleep remedy works wonders and tastes so good. How does it work? Bananas, especially the peels, are loaded with potassium and magnesium. While magnesium helps prevent sleep disturbances, both magnesium and potassium work together to help relax muscles. In fact, magnesium is one of the best minerals for relaxation! Keep in mind, this recipe calls for 100% organic bananas. Bananas that are not organic are loaded with harmful pesticides and since we encourage you to eat the boiled peel, it must be chemical-free.

This tea takes less than 10 minutes to prepare and can be enjoyed every night before bed.

1 organic banana
1 small pot of water
a dash of cinnamon (optional)

All you need to do is cut off both ends of the banana and place it, peel and all, into boiling water. Boil it for around 10 minutes. Using a colander, pour the water into a mug. If you’re feeling adventurous, sprinkle the cinnamon into the tea. Drink it one hour before bed time.

If you’re worried about being wasteful, you’ve clearly never had a boiled banana before! After the banana has been boiled, sprinkle some cinnamon over it. Eating the warm, gooey fruit and its peel along with the tea will increase its soothing effects… Not to mention it makes a yummy dessert!
