Way too many people that I know still consume beverages and eat snacks that contain artificial sweeteners. I, of course, am the annoying person in their lives that can’t help themselves and tells them to “cut it out.” I only speak up because I ultimately care about their well-being.
Why artificial sweeteners are bad:
1- Some are carcinogenic and increase your risk of bladder and other cancers
2- Some are toxic and can cause neurological damage
3- They can actually cause weight gain
4- They can disrupt the endocrine system
5- They can cause depression and headaches
6- They can cause autoimmune disorders
7- They can increase the risk of preterm delivery
In addition, research has revealed that artificial sweeteners can alter and destroy gut microflora, which is essential to the overall health of the body and the brain.
Evidence indicates that a 12-wk administration of Splenda exerted numerous adverse effects, including (1) reduction in beneficial fecal microflora, (2) increased fecal pH, and (3) enhanced expression levels of P-gp, CYP3A4, and CYP2D1, which are known to limit the bioavailability of orally administered drugs.
